"Outstanding hotel with lots of history"
By Anonymous on Thursday, July 26, 2007

Perfect as is. Please do not change anything. Such a clean and comfortable hotel with so much interesting history. Right in the center of Ocean City's most popular area with tons of stores, rides and lots of fun and crazy things but then you come through the front door and you're in a quiet sanctuary having left all that fun and craziness on the other side of the door. Please don't change anything, we'll be back as soon as we can get some more time to get away!

Nice Hotel, Service A Bit Slow
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
Just spent 5 days at the flanders hotel. We stayed in a corner room which was much bigger than the other rooms, although they are all suites w/ a separate bedroom... We loved the room and loved the fact that we were right on the beach and boardwalk. The only problems we encountered were with the maid service and the very slow elevators. For some reason the maid would do a few rooms on a floor than not come back until 5:00, it was wierd. If you took the elevator which we did because we wre on the 6th floor you usually had to wait for at least 3-4 cars to fill up come and go. Even with that, i would stay there again. I think that the rooms are privately owned and some are great and some are not... Luckly we stayed in one that had all sorts of books and video's for the kids , all types of popcorn, coffee etc to snack on and they even supplied us w/ washing machine detergent and dryer sheets.... If you stay before the end of june the price is half of what the july/aug season is.

The Flanders Flounders
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

The flanders flounders talk about a fall from grace. My family and i stayed at the flanders in ocean city this past weekend. This once stately property is now a bonefide mess. What a shame. The problem is management, or, more appropriately, mismanagement, we never got maid service, even though we called twice as well as registered our predicament at the front desk. What 's more, the manager, a mr. Victor, didn't even bother to return a call we left on his personal voice mail. Other basic "amenities" were also sadly lacking. To get the pool, you had to walk around the building, make a right at a heap of smelly garbage, then follow the dirty paint chips to the pool. It looked more like a war zone than a resort. Beach tags had to be returned by 3pm or your credit card was charged $20 per tag, parking cost $10 a day, and there was no "courtesy" room for after-beach clean up; a simple amenity that other beach hotels offer, after all, check out is at 11am. As i child i used to look up to the flanders in awe. Now i shake my head and wonder how a prime property in "america's playground" can be allowed to deteriorate like that. And i'm still waiting for an apology, or explanation, from the manager...if "mr. Victor" even exists.

Caretakers of This Landmark Should Be Ashamed!
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
I booked the room at the flanders with some trepidation after reading the reviews. However as my ailing mother had such sentimental memories of her grandmother's store, originally housed in the flanders, i wanted to give her a treat. While the rooms at the flanders are quite nice, i echo the sentiments of others on the service. During our stay there had been no towel delivery, hence guests were waiting all day for towels. Maids resorted to washing the towels in the laundry rooms located on each floor. I felt that was not as sanitary a cleaning as the professsional service provided. I was also horrified to find when i went to do laundry at the end of our stay, every washing machine i tried (three) was broken! The reviewer who mentioned the trek to the pool was dead on. They turned the room that allowed you to you walk to the pool into a conference center of some sort and locked all convenient access to the hotel from the pool. Not only do you have to go by the garbage, but also the all the huge smelly air conditioning units (or whatever they were), blowing hot exhaust. Check-in is a nightmare, there is no standard hotel desk at the flanders and the two somewhat ditzy clerks sit behind regular office desks. It is very inconvenient to sign anything and guests are hearded in at 3:00 like cattle. We arrived at 2:40 p.m. And were told our room was not ready. Three o'clock came and went and the desk clerks began admitting other guests and completely ignored us, finally i asked about our room. It was ready, but they hadn't bothered to tell us. The manager is a dolt as well, i watched him interact with other patrons, all of whom seemed to have one problem or another checking in. Another alarming occurance is that there is no computer system at all, i had months ago called to confirm my dates of arrival, as i had forgotten the exact date - and the desk clerk couldn't find it without the exact date, because of the manual system. Think dewey decimal card catalog, that's what it looked like. One fellow checking in had three rooms under his name when he only reserved one. They insisted since there were three cards he reserved three rooms. The maids smoking in the stairwell, was charming, especially given the extremely small elevators (5-person max, forget it if someone has luggage) you'd think they'd realize patrons would be forced to use the stairs! The roach hotels in the stairwells were also a lovely advertisement for a bug problem i would have never known about, as i did not see a single bug. My conclusion is that it is sad that the management is so bad at doing their jobs, as the suites are very nicely kept, clean and huge. I was fortunate to pay the off season rate of $169.00, the following week the rates went up to $299.00 a night. Pricey for a hotel that barely gets around to cleaning your room (3:30 p.m.) And doesn't have towels!

The Flanders Definitely Flounders
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
During our stay, we were plagued with nothing but problems!! We arrived at the hotel after a lenghty drive at 1:00 p.m. We went to the front desk where we were greeted with what appeared to be a hassled staff. We were stiffly told that our room would not be ready until 3:00p.m. With that we went up to the boardwalk for awhile then decided to go and explore the flander's pool area. What a disgrace! There is no entrance from within the hotel to the pool. One must exit the hotel and follow the broken concrete path with barely visible yellow arrows through an alley. After sitting at the poolside for a while (it was now 2:55 p.m) we decided to go to the front desk and get our key for the room. While making our way through this uneven terrain, i twisted my ankle, fell and dislocated and fractured my finger. I got up and dusted off the rubble and proceeded into the hotel lobby. When i approached the front desk and asked for our room i was again told that it was not ready. I then explained to them that i had fallen and injured my hand and could they please get me some ice. The front desk people told me that they had no ice. There are no ice machines in the hotel. At this point i went to a quiet area of the hotel to await the availabilty of my room. I waited and waited. Finally, at 3:30 p.m. I went back to the front desk . This time i didn't ask them if the room was ready, i told them i was ready to go to my room!! I was given the keys and upon entering our "deluxe suite" was quite surprised that it was clean, bright and up to date. I quickly retrieved some ice from the freezer and went to seek medical attention. Later that evening upon returning from the hospital, while my husband and child unpacked the car, i discovered that our "deluxe suite" had coffee but no coffemaker. I called the front desk and was told that one was not available, but they would see what they could do. Well as the night passed into the morning i still had no coffemaker. With repeated calls and personal visits to the front desk,it was two days before a coffemaker was placed in our room. At this point i thought to myself... Mission accomplished! There can't possibly be anything else that could go wrong with our stay...life is grand !! I was wrong. On our third day we left our room at 8:00 in the morning and returned after 3:00 in the afternoon to find that our suite had not been touched by housekeeping. I promptly called housekeeping and the executive housekeeper told me that they had 38 departures and 38 arrivals that day. Like this is my problem!!!!! On this day i did my own housekeeping. It just seemed that the poor work ethic of the management had a "trickle down" effect to their staff. As i told an employee of the "floundering" flander's i would have received better service at a red roof inn!!!

Best Place To Stay In Ocean City!
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
The flanders is definitely the best place to stay in ocean city! The rooms are great, the staff is friendly, it is in the perfect location on the boardwalk, and it's within walking distance of shopping, restaurants, and bike rentals. The hotel is going through some changes (we were told that the second floor is not occupied, but is in the process of being sold to a banquet company), and the front desk area is in the process of being renovated, but none of this bothered our really fun week there. For some reason, access to the pool is part of the front desk renovation and will be made easier once everything is completed. It was a bit of a hassle to get to, but once there, the pool was like a big bathtub - warm and relaxing. This is the perfect spot for a vacation or quick getaway!

Had A Wonderful Time At This Historic Facility…

I was at this hotel at the end of june and it was wonderful. When I checked in on a sunday, it was very busy and all the rooms were not ready, but within 1/2 hour it was taken care of. Even the manager of the hotel went upstairs to make sure rooms were clean. The desk staff was nice and cordial under pressure from other rude people. The room was very clean and the hotel is in a great location. The pool is heated and clean as well. All in all, it was a great week in ocean city...i'm coming back next year. When I checked out, they even guaranteed me the same rate fornext year when I made my reservations. You don't get service like that any more.

Basic Clean Condos
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
Flanders. A thoughtful review. The flanders has a good location near the boardwalk and the beach. It offers parking for a fee which is convenient during the busy season. The rooms are condominiums so decor may vary. Our room was clean and roomy with a good view. The pool is at the level of basic motel pool. Check-in time is late and check-out time early. You cannot check your bags if you arrive early which I think many people would find inconvient. Housekeeping is good, otherwise there are few hotel services. Currently there is no restaurant. The flanders does not have a very beachy feel. People who like clean air-conditioned condos will probaby like it. Families looking for a beachside trip may be disappointed. Also anybody who remember the old grand hotel will not feel it measures up.

A Disappointing Stay
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
We stayed at the flanders in september 2003. We were surprised by the lack of professionalism in the staff. The desk managers did not act in a manner expected at a finer hotel. Rooms were clean, but without ammenities. The pool was a disgrace. You actually have to walk through an alley of garbage to get to it. We were disappointed that there was no longer a restaurant, coffee shop, or place to buy papers on the premesis. The hotel gives off the feel of a place that is falling apart. Also of note is that our ocean view suite was above an amusement park that doesn't shut down until around midnight.

Fine Family Hotel

The flanders has classic rooms with a thoughtful decor. The bedding was very comfortable with all the features of home. The downstairs presented an array of antique furniture. The history of the grand old gal was captured by elegant surroundings. The people were all helpful and nice. Regretfully there was no dining room. The serenity of the shore can surely be felt at the flanders. Close to the boardwalk the flanders will always be my choice of superb hotels in ocean city. Look forward to our next visit.

Really Weak Effort At Upscale Hotel
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
You have got to be kidding me! Is the management of this hotel trying to pass this place off as a "luxury" hotel? The best part of the stay was walking into the Victorian lobby. It was smartly appointed, with coffee and Dunkin' Donuts coffee available. We arrive around noon and were politely and professionally informed that due to the busy nature of this particular weekend, that they would only guarantee the room's availability after 3pm. This was not a problem, as we were instructed in acvance that this was their policy. Unfortunately, the hotel did not have the facilities to hold our luggage either, so we had to leave it in the minivan. We had the foresight to wear our bathing suits, so we went to the beach for a couple of hours. We returned at 3pm and got our room keys and complimentary beach tags. It was a challenge to get 5 people( two of them under 5) and our luggage into the elevator. The room was smartly appointed with yellow walls and crown moulding, but the looks was as good as it got. I have to say, that the hide-away cot in our closet at home, was 5 times more comfortable than the smallish-double bed we received. It was one of the most uncomfortable mattresses I have ever had to sleep on. Motel 6 has better bedding. In conclusion, you could absolutely get a better room at a casino for less money, with way better amenities. Not recommended to anyone who requires a good night's sleep.

Staying at the flanders with my family was the most enjoyable time I have ever had in the past 10 years in oc. This hotel is absolutely beautiful. The renovated suite of rooms were so tastefully decorated and comfortable, I felt like I was at home. It was so clean & roomy, the staff was so friendly and attentive. The convenieve of staying right on the boardwalk and only steps to the beach or to their pool was an added bonus.thanks for restoring all the suites in this hotel and making it the most beautiful hotel in ocean city.

Fun At The Jersey Shore
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
We stayed in "the penthouse suite" for 2 nights, then headed down to wildwood crest for 2 nights. The flanders hotel was very nice, and i'd definitely recommend it. The people at the front desk were very helpful - one lady even gave us detailed local directions to atlantic city (without getting on the parkway). The big, 2 bedroom suite was perfect, although it was a little pricey. Our only complaint was that we would have liked a second bathroom (we were 2 adults, a 22 year-old girl, a teenage girl, and an 11 year-old boy). The location on the boardwalk was fantastic, and the free parking (yes, they don't charge anymore) across the street worked out very well. Also, the comp coffee and tea in the lobby was great! If you enjoy more of a hotel atmosphere, rather than the crummy motels you usually find at the jersey shore, go for flanders. Ocean city is lovely! We had so much fun!

Huge Disappointment At The Flanders Hotel
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
My husband and i were disappointed from the moment we checked in. First there were no bellmen on duty. "all of our bellmen went back to college", we were advised by the woman at check in. Take note: the loud rides on the boardwalk were located right outside of our room. The first key card didn't work. The coffee maker & the vcr didn't work. Wallpaper border was falling off of the walls in the bathroom & there was either a blood stain or something else that was red on the wallpaper too. The bed was supposed to be a queen, i know it wasn't . It was smaller and uncomfortable. It looked like someone ran into the wall with something many times since there was damage to the wall. My son and i thought we'd go to the pool after being at the beach. Guess again, someone got sick in the pool & it was just closed. On the day of our check out, my husband tried to get a bellman's cart that took close to an hour! When i checked out, the woman at the desk asked how our stay was. I told her what i just mentioned and i said that we were very disappointed, she replied that by the end of the summer the rooms (which are really condos) take a beating, come back in june 2005. I told her that we really liked another hotel that we stayed at last year in ocean city.

Flanders - A Wonderful Warm Feeling

My wife and I recently spent some time in this lovely (80 year old) hotel. The antique furniture in the lobby gives you an instant warm comfortable feeling. The suites have all modern conveniences and decorating, complete to a dvd player in the room which we occupied. The staff was great and immediatley responded to our request for an additional blanket and pillow. The location is superb - right at the boardwalk. Our suite had ocean views from every window!! We left with only one regret - that we could not have stayed longer.

Upon arrival both denise, marketing director and gloria, front desk manager were there to greet us. They made us feel welcome and comfortable. The rooms were lovely and the food delicious. They have restored my trust in the hotel. Thanks again to everyone at the front desk, the housekeeping staff and especially denise and gloria. This Establishment Really Cares
By Susan Freer on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
I was surprised and delighted at the response from Denise Marcell at The Flanders Hotel to my request for help. The compassion and kindness I was shown is deeply appreciated and only surpassed by the generosity of the people there. They donated wonderful gifts for the Chinese Auction we are having at the Benefit for our daughter. It isn't easy to procure gifts for such an event and the generosity of a 2 night stay - off season - Ocean Front or Deluxe at The Flanders Hotel and Breakfast at Ain't We Sweet will be among our highlighted items. I expressed my gratitude to Denise Marcell at The Flanders Hotel and she responded by offering of one of Artur Saryan's sketches (which sell for $100 or more) and possibley one of his Paintings. I have read up on this Artist and am very impressed with his work. He is very imaginative and his work is vibrant with color. This is an establishment that is very generous and Community Involved. I only hope that the public becomes more aware of them by patronizing the type of establishment that really cares for people. It is with a grateful heart that I express my thanks to them for their generosity in our time of need and reach out to let others know of the type of people who run this famous establishment.

Went to the flanders for new year's eve. The hotel is breathtaking, the lobby is lovely. I play piano and was welcomed to play the gorgeous baby grand in the lobby. Our suite was so roomy that it didn't feel at all like a hotel room. We could see the ocean from our windows, and loved strolling up to the boardwalk (as soon as we exited the hotel we were on it) and browsing mia's christmas shop (on the corner). The location is perfect, the staff was wonderful, and I felt rich!

Management Response
By Gloria Fischer, General Manager on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
I noticed that this review is dated march 22, 2005. My first impression was..."why would it take someone 3 months to write a letter"...as the reference is new years eve?! But as i read on, i realized that this person is actually writing at best, a new years eve, at least 2 years ago?! I don't know exactly what a $10 conference table is, but there certainly isn't one in our lobby, and most certainly wasn't one there this new year's eve past, which by the way, we here in ocean city call "first night". . I think when one steps into our lobby, the first thought might be, as mine actaully was, this is like stepping back in time, to a simpler and more elegant day!" our rental suites while condo's, are all most tastefully and fashionably decorated, and we are proud of their condition. I would match the talents of our housekeeping staff with any, anywhere, and when it comes to caring and going the extra mile, this entire staff blows the competion out of the water! The flander's is all about hospitality! I question the validity of this review because of the "facts" stated, and can't help but wonder who really wrote it, and when it was actually from? The flanders is a non-smoking facility! So again, the "reference" is either made up, or from some previous time, long behind and totally unrelated to present management and staff. / with all due apologies, please note i found the date of the stay to be 12/04, and this is a complete and total non-truth. We had not one single complaint new years eve 2004, and i know because i was on site! The only coplaint i heard new years eve was that we were sold out!

First night at the Flanders Hotel, wow. My friends had stayed at The Flanders the year before and begged us to join them for New Years. What a great time. My husband and I had a great time and look forward to spending Valentine's Day at the hotel, thank you Flanders.

Reconsider, and Go Elsewhere!
By Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Visitor Review
We rented a room (condo) for new years because the b&b we wanted to really stay at was already booked. This place was aweful! First, they didn't tell us that each hotel room/condo is individually owned and that they vary widely in terms of their quality and upkeep. Second, our condo/room smelled, looked as if it wasn't cleaned in months, there was mold on the bathroom wall, and the couch had stains all over it. We were so disappointed with our experience. When we complained, the management who was set up at a $10 conference table in what was supposed to look like a front lobby told us they couldn't do anything, and there would be no refund. They told us that each room has individual private owners and there is never any guarantee to the individual condition of the room when you book it. Also, the hallways smelled like cigarette smoke which made me gag. There are plenty of really nice places to stay in ocean city, unfortunately, the flanders is not one of them. This a place past its prime. Don't do it…look elsewhere!

Can'T Wait To Go Back!

A few friends and i recently had a girl's weekend at the flanders hotel to relax and get away from college. We all ended up taking our schoolwork to finish papers for the end of the semester; the flanders was a great place for each of us to do our work. We also made time to go to the boardwalk to do some shopping and some sightseeing. The flanders was extremely comfortable and the staff that we ran into was friendly and willing to accommodate us in any way possible. We each spent time in the large beautiful lobby downstairs, it was a perfect place for us to spread out our work and have some peace and quiet. The staff made several trips over to each of us making sure they couldn't do anything for us. The room we stayed in was exactly what you expect a beach house to look like; it helped remove us from our work and allowed us to really relax. Now that we have graduated we have already booked another trip to the flanders for the end of the summer. We had a great time and can't wait to go back!

A Classic Hotel

The hotel location couldn't be better, right on the boardwalk and beach. The lobby is very nicely decorated with antique furniture and a visit to the Ballroom on the second floor, restored to it original appearance, is like a trip back to the 1920s. I was told the Flanders is a very popular wedding site and I can see why. I was disappointed to learn that the restaurant was not open but there were plenty of places to eat in the area. Our one-bedroom suite was surprisingly roomy, especially the bathroom, with plenty of natural light throughout. The hallways and our suite were clean. Kitchen facilites were convenient (sink, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, 2 burners) but we weren't there to cook. Despite the amusement park nearby on our side of the building, the suite was perfectly quiet. There were also laundry facilities, which was convenient. The staff seemed friendly. We had no special requests or needs but the front desk staff seemed to be very attentive in assisting others. The pool area was adequate, could use a little decorating. I believe the pool was heated. I noticed the fitness center but didn't have time to check it out. Next time. It was nice that they even provided us with beach tags. A first class hotel in a seashore resort town. What a great combination.

Made reservations a few weeks ago for a two bedroom oceanfront and paid up front. Now, when it's too late to shop around, they called and told me that it's not available and I will have to book 2 1-bedroom units at full price (nearly double the cost). They're not willing to do anything to make it right.

Excellent Ocean City Hotel

We stayed at the flanders for one week and had a great time. This is a grand and charming hotel in a wonderful location. The hotel is situated right on the boardwalk where all of the action is. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Me and my family (wife and nine year old daughter) had a blast. We stayed in a one bedroom suite with a king size bed and an ocean view. The room was spacious, clean and furnished nicely with a full kitchen. The lobby was redone and very comfortable. The pool is clean and conveniently located on the hotel grounds. There are two terminals in the hotel office with free unlimited internet access, which is a great plus for those of us addicted to e-mail. My only complaint is that after the daily maid service, the dirty towels were left in the hallway for a different part of the cleaning staff to pickup. I found this surprising for a hotel of this calibur. Also, it would have been nice if the hotel restaurants were open. This was our first trip to ocean city. We will be returning and when we do we will certainly stay at the flanders.

Do Not Stay Here

The worst hotel in ocean city. I grew up in ocean city, and on a recent trip back for a wedding I booked a room at the flanders, and paid up front. However, I arrived to find out that they gave my room to someone else and told me they were full. After many complaints, they gave me a downgraded room and no refund. It was a classic bait and switch. So anyone planning a trip to ocnj, do not stay at the flanders. Better hotels are the forum and the impala.

I brought a large group to the ocean room restaurant this year (it is located inside the historic flanders hotel), and had an extremely pleasant dining experience. The dress is casual, the atmosphere is elegant, and the food is delicious. They are very accommodating to large groups (calling in advance is recommended). I recommend that you stop here for dinner - the style could be described as casual cuisine with an upscale vibe.
